BOARD BRIEFS


At its Regular Meeting of August 21, 2007 the Board of Education conducted the following business:

President Williams called the regular meeting, in the Board Room at Indian Trail, to order at 7:20 p.m.

After a brief moment of silence, Mr. Langton led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance.

At this time, John Daniels, was sworn in as the newest member of the Board of Education.

The Board approved the minutes of the Budget, Regular and Closed Session Meetings of July 24, 2007.

The Board approved the Accounts Payable for August 2007.

The Board approved the Payroll for July 2007.

Communication/Public Participation on Agenda and Non-Agenda Items : Mr. Eugene Blahut asked who will use the spinning bikes, recently purchased for the junior high students. The spinning bikes will be incorporated into the PE curriculum to enhance student fitness.

What's Happening at Fullerton Elementary School

Dr. Reeves shared information that was given to incoming 1 st grade families to enhance the reading skills that were developed in kindergarten. This information was to be used by the parents over the summer, to help the student keep their skills sharp for 1 st grade. It was also suggested that students review the reading list included in this packet and sign up for a library card. Dr. Reeves shared that a CD was created for Fullerton incoming 1 st grade students. All information was available in Spanish and English.

Dr. Reeves described the special education student inclusion process that was implemented at Fullerton last year. She explained the process and the successful outcome of placing special education in all main stream classes.

Student Assessment Information

Dr. Sharma-Lewis explained that monitoring of student teaching and learning takes place through assessment. The way the district currently measures student achievement through assessments was explained. A different approach to assessment measurement was described. The Board will be given a demonstration on this process, entitled MAPS, at the September Board meeting.

The Board accepted the District 4 Staff Resignation Requests.

The Board approved the District 4 Staff Employment Requests.

The Board approved changing the September 11 Board of Education Meeting to Monday, September 10, 2007.

The Board approved the Declassification of Closed Session Minutes.

The Board approved the Resolution for Transfer of Funds, previously approved at the June 24, 2007 Board of Education meeting.

The Board approved the bid to install a new compressor unit (Option III) from Payne Mechanical in the amount not to exceed $16,010 and reject all other bids.

Items of Discussion:

Next Regular Board of Education Meeting – MONDAY, September 10, 2007 – 7:00 p.m. – Indian Trail Junior High School - Board Room

Financial Software Purchase – Mr. Hitcho described the inadequacies of the current program and the process implemented to correct this situation. It is hoped that a recommendation will be brought to the Board at the September 25 Board of Education Meeting.

Student Enrollment Information – Mr. Langton indicated that the district is looking at enrollment in three areas at Stone, Lake Park and Fullerton . He will update the Board after the sixth day enrollment figures are studied

Board Training Sessions through IASB – Mr. Williams will contact the IASB and inform them that the Board is not interested in this training at this time.

Parent University – Addison Trail High School – November 3, 2007 – Addison Trail High School will be hosting a community Parent University on Saturday, November 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The focus of a parent University is to present 50 minute sessions on various topics of interest to community members.

Board Committee Assignments - Due to the resignation of a Board member and the appointment of a new member, John Daniels, committee assignments were discussed and reassignments were announced.

Renovation of 121 Fullerton Building - The District is considering some minor renovations to the building at 121 Fullerton for future use.
