The house area is where children play "make-believe". They take on social roles and engage in imitative behaviors. They interact and play cooperatively with others. They replay real-life situations, and solve problems from past encounters. They develop language skills talking about their roles. They classify the props they might be using. They use their small muscles to manipulate dress-up clothes or doll clothes. |

Parents can
encourage the same kind of dramatic play at home by
providing a box of dress-up clothes for the children to play
with. These can be old clothes from parents, old pieces of
costumes, hats, scarves, gloves, shoes, glasses, hair
accessories, jewelry, etc. On a rainy day, you might provide
an old sheet to put over the kitchen table to serve as a
"hideout" or a "fort" to add to the make-believe
play.
