Sand play allows children to develop their minds and bodies in a relaxing and enjoyable way. Sand is a sensory material that allows children to use their senses of sight, hearing, touch, and smell. Sand play provides children with the opportunity for hands-on, self-directed, and self-centered activity, as well as the opportunity to learn. They develop creativity and problem-solving skills as they mold with wet sand. They compare and contrast textures while using wet and dry sand. They develop small muscles while pouring and molding sand. They use math skills as they pour and measure sand from one container to another. Sand is a wonderful medium! |

Parents can
provide opportunities for sand play in various ways. Sand
can be used indoors, but it is very messy. A large plastic
tub filled with sanitized play sand (sand can be purchased
at children's toys stores in 50 lb. bags) can be placed on a
blanket on the floor. Add some plastic measuring cups, a
shovel, bucket, small truck, and a sifter and you're set to
go. Sand is best used outdoors where the mess is not a
problem. Sandboxes can be easily crafted out of wood.
Plastic sandboxes can be purchased at children's toys
stores.
