Water play allows children to use their senses of sight, hearing, touch, and smell. Children soothe their minds and bodies during water play. They refine muscles and learn about volume while pouring water from one container into another. They develop cognitive skills when they drop different objects into the water to see which sink and which float. When a group of children is gathered around the water table, social skills and language skills are used when children take turns with the materials and discuss what they are doing. |

Water play can
be set up at home in the bathtub or kitchen sink. Providing
plastic measuring cups for pouring promotes math skills.
Have a container of other materials that might include a
cork, a small rubber ball, a stone and other items your
child can drop into the water to see if they sink or float.
Add bubbles, or use blowing bubbles in the tub for a new
sensory experience.
