Heart Board Notes

Heart is located in the chest cavity directly behind the sternum.

The heart a hollowed four chambered organ made of Cardiac muscle.

Cardiac muscle is involuntary.

The upper chambers are ATRIUM

The lower chambers are VENTRICLES

Atrium receive blood from the body and ventricles pump blood away from the heart.

 

Veins bring blood back to the heart

Arteries carry blood away from the heart

Blood moves through the heart in only one direction because of valves.

Vena cava to right atrium to right ventricle to lungs return to left atrium to left ventricle to aorta

The heart feeds is own muscle with a group of arteries known as coronary arteries These are the arteries that are involved in heart attacks. If they become blocked

Blood pressure

Your blood pressure is measured twice once when the left ventricle pumps and once when the left ventricle is resting.

Systolic 120 normal blood pressure over 139 systolic or 90 diastolic is high

Diastolic 80

Red blood cellos carry oxygen

White blood cells fight infections

Platelets stop bleeding

Risk Factors

Male or Female- Men have more Heart Problems

Old or young- old have more Heart Problems

Smoking or no Smoking Smokers-have more Heart Problems

High Fat Diet or Balanced Diet-High Fat have more Heart Problems

Blood Cholesterol High or Under 200- High have more Heart Problems

Exercise or no Exercise- No exercise have more Heart Problems

We can control our diet, smoking habits and exercise habits.

Exercising safely to make your heart stronger

How to find.

220 minus your age times .65 = lowest number

220 minus your age times .85 = Highest number

Example 48 year old person

220 - 48=172 172 * .65 = 112 beats per minute

220 - 48=172 172 * .85 = 146 beats per minute

This person would have to exercise for twenty to thirty minutes three to four days a week and keep his heart rate between 112 and 146.

This will make his heart stronger.
