MUSCULAR SYSTEM BOARD NOTES
Types of Muscle Control
- Skeletal - Voluntary
- Smooth - Involuntary
- Cardiac (heart) - Involuntary
Voluntary muscles are those that you have control over
Muscle action
Muscles are made of individual fibers that are then grouped together into bundles of muscles.
Muscle tissue has the ability to become shorter. This causes movement in our body.
This shortening is done by a chemical reaction.
This chemical reaction causes heat and a waste product called lactic acid to be produced.
Excess heat makes us sweat and the lactic acid is what makes our muscle get tired.
Muscles must work in pairs over a joint.
One muscle bends the joint and the other muscle straightens the joint. When a muscle is
contracting the opposite muscle is relaxing.
All or none principle.
When a muscle fiber contracts it contract at full power. Muscles are connected to the bones
by tendons. A tendon is a tough band of connective tissue that doesn’t stretch
