Welcome to Wesley School
It is a privilege to be returning as Principal for Wesley Elementary School. I am excited to be back and work with this positive and dynamic community of learners. As educators, our goal is to provide each child a positive and nurturing learning environment.
Wesley School is a diverse and enthusiastic community of learners. We service students in grades Kindergarten through 5th grade. This year our enrollment has increased slightly to 334 students. In addition to our academic learning, each week students receive instruction in the areas or Art, Music and Physical Education. Students also have the opportunity to enhance their learning each week by going to the Learning Resource Center (LRC), where they receive instruction with computers and other technology.
When you enter our school, you will see students and teachers engaged in learning. You might see students working individually, in small groups, or utilizing technology. As a staff, we are dedicated to ensure that each child's needs are met socially, academically, and emotionally. In order to meet each child's needs, we have set school goals in the following three areas: Reading, Math, and Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS).
Reading: As a staff we will be focusing on the concepts and practices of Guided Reading. Teachers will consistently monitor students' reading progress as they utilize whole group, individualized, and small group instruction to teach the students the concepts of reading. We will also be paying particular attention to the areas of Vocabulary and Word Work when working with students.
Math: Math is one of Wesley's areas of strength. We utilize Harcourt Math to teach the students the concepts of Math and Problem Solving Skills. Teachers will consistently monitor students' math progress as they utilize whole group, individualized, and small group instruction to teach the students the concepts of math.
PBIS: As a school, we value positive behavior and the emotional needs of students just as much as their academic needs. Each child is an individual, and we are committed to providing a positive and nurturing atmosphere where individuals feel valued and positive behaviors are celebrated. This year we will continue to promote the three Wesley Expectations:
Be Safe, Be Responsible, Be Respectful
Students who follow the expectations and are "caught" making good choices will be recognized in a number of ways. First, the student may receive a Wildcat Cash from an adult. This Wildcat cash can then be redeemed at our Paw Pantry (school store), or turned in for one of three weekly raffle prizes:
Students can win a day to say the pledge.
Students can win lunch with a teacher.
Students can win an extra 15 minutes of recess time for their class with the principal.
Second, students who follow the expectations could also be recognized with a "Shout Out". Each week teachers will recognize one student from their classroom who they feel sets a positive example for others by following the expectations. These students are then recognized on Fridays during their lunch with an announcement. They then have their picture taken and put up on our Shout Out Superstar Wall.
In addition, we will have school-wide goals for the students to work towards together. Our first goal is for the students to attain a total of 1,000 Wildcat Cash. Once they accomplish this goal, the students will vote on a school wide celebration.
We are so fortunate to have parents that support the educational process and spend numerous hours volunteering in our school. Our PTA is very involved with the school and provides our students with assemblies and other educational opportunities throughout the year. A strong home and school connection is vital to the success of students. An important piece to this connection is communication. Every Thursday, a packet of information from the district will go home with students. These packets will go home with the only/oldest child of a family. In addition, every two weeks a school newsletter will be attached to the Thursday packet. This newsletter has information about upcoming events and important dates that pertain to Wesley School. The newsletters are also available through this website.
I am looking forward to another exciting, challenging, and successful year at Wesley Elementary School. I invite you to learn more about our school and the district through this website. If you ever have any questions, suggestions or comments, please feel free to contact me at any time. blangman@asd4.org or by phone: 630-628-4060

Robert Langman
