Emergency Response & Preparedness

Addison School District 4 has a comprehensive Safety and Crisis Manual outlining responses to specific emergencies such as medical emergencies, fire, severe weather, gas leak, etc.  The District also utilizes the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) developed by the I Love You Guys Foundation.  The SRP was designed to provide a consistent, shared language and actions for students, staff, and first responders.

  • A HOLD is used when hallways need to be kept clear due to a situation in school.  Students and staff are instructed to clear the halls and remain securely in their classroom or area.  All classroom activities carry on, as usual, during a HOLD.

Some example situations when a HOLD might be used:

    • A HOLD keeps hallways clear so that first responders can assist with a medical emergency, if necessary.
    • There is a big water spill in the hallways, causing a slipping hazard.  A HOLD would be used to keep students and staff safe until the hazard can be cleaned up.
  • SECURE is used as a precautionary measure due to activity in the community nearby the school.  All students and staff are required to remain indoors and all instruction and normal activities continue, as normal.

Some example situations when a SECURE might be used:

    • Law enforcement activity nearby the school
    • Dangerous animal nearby school grounds
  • LOCKDOWN is used when there is a threat inside the school.  During a Lockdown, instruction and school activities cease as staff and students move to a secure area as quickly as possible.

Some example situations when a LOCKDOWN might be used:

    • An intruder enters the building
  • EVACUATE will be called if students and staff must be moved to a new or safe location due to a situation in or near the school building.

Some example situations when EVACUATE might be used:

    • Gas Leak
    • Bomb threat
  • SHELTER is utilized when there is a hazard outside of the school and staff and students need to move to a place of safety within the school building.

Some example situations when a SHELTER might be used:

    • Severe weather
    • Tornado
  • In the event that staff and students cannot return to the school following any scenario, they may be moved to a REUNIFICATION SITE at a new location.  We will work with first responders as efficiently as possible and communicate with parents throughout the process.
